Workshop D11

Political Risk Analysis and Investment Decisions

WORKSHOP LEADER(S)

John Maltby and Matthew Horrox

WORKSHOP SYNOPSIS

Political risks associated with conducting business in new markets or unfamiliar countries can be many, varied and often hidden. They can have a significant impact on the success or failure of a project. They can be financial risks, security risks, or reputational risks and be the result of regulation, business culture, or political forces.

The session will provide an introduction to political risk in its broadest sense and some methodologies that can be used to structure an assessment. The concepts will be explored in the context of a company making an investment decision.

Only by conducting a systematic assessment of political risks (in addition to commercial risks) can an investor be said to be taking a comprehensive approach to business risk assessment in its investment decisions.

Due to time restrictions, this will session will inevitably be at a high level. However, participants will be asked to participate in an interactive case study that will help to illustrate our concepts and provide an interesting forum in which to explore issues, thoughts and lessons.
