Risk Management and Innovation in Japan, Britain and the United States
Edited by Professor Ruth Taplin
Routledge
ISBN 0-415-36806-5
Ruth Taplin is a well known researcher and author in the field of innovation and Far Eastern studies. For this book, Ruth has brought together a group of leading practitioners and academics from Jpan and the UK. The book falls naturally into two parts.
The first part deals with intellectual property, brand, reputation and emerging risks, and draws out the differences, including culture, in approach to these in Japan, the UK and USA. In turn, these differences are then examined for their impact on innovation in each of these countries.
The second part deals with ‘harder’ risk management concepts including the role of insurance, captives and protected cell companies. The Basel II Capital Accord on operational risk in banking is also reviewed as is the role of insurance in mitigation of such risks.
The book concludes with a review of innovation in the insurance industry and a useful synopsis of the nature and evolution of enterprise-wide risk management.
This is a useful text , particularly for those interested in cultural differences between East and West, and approaches to ‘softer’ risk areas in each.
