Institute of Risk Management Appoints First Indian Ambassadors

The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) is delighted to announce that Mr Sonjai Kumar, CMIRM and Abhishek Paul, IRMCert will be our ambassadors in Gurgaon, India. They will act as our local experts who will help students and professionals wanting to make a career in the risk profession - through the risk knowledge that IRM imparts and forging local networking groups for sharing of best practice and advice.
Currently the IRM has around a hundred members in India and are keen to develop relationships in the region.

Nicola Crawford, CFIRM, Chair of the IRM said:

“This is an exciting development for the IRM to be able to reach out to global members who are experts in their field and leverage their expertise in local markets.

India as an economy is developing at an exponential rate and has a huge bank of talent coming out of the education system – now is as good a time as any to help develop enterprise risk management to ensure business longevity and success. Particularly in the banking and insurance sectors.
I’d like to thank Sonjai and Abishek for their commitment to the IRM and really look forward to working with them going forwards”.

Sonjai Kumar is Vice President (Business Risk) for Aviva India and said:

“My local presence will help disseminate risk knowledge to local people creating stronger ties with the Institute. Ever since the global financial crisis, risk management has come up in the forefront of any business decision making process.

The emergence of risk-based capital across the world in banking and insurance sector has led to the increase in the role of enterprise risk management as an essential tool of capital and profit management. It is known that risks cannot be eliminated but can only be managed – the IRM has a key role to play in this”.

Sonjai will play a key role in bridging this gap in risk management knowledge; he is a very passionate risk management professional with over two decades of experience working in the insurance sector. He is a regular speaker in different risk forums in India and abroad and regular contributor in the risk management write-ups.

Abhishek Paul, IRMCert, Associate VP: Risk and Conduct Assurance at the Royal Bank of Scotland, India said:

"I am looking forward to representing IRM in India as an ambassador for the institute.
I believe we as ambassadors for IRM in India can help to spread awareness in in the region to ensure that highly skilled risk management professionals (and those looking to enter the profession) are recognised.
We can reach out to others who are struggling in the field to inspire and encourage them with our success stories and to encourage organisations to sponsor and develop their talent pool”.
