Q:
What’s
in it for me?
A: Fellowship shows a firm commitment to the highest
standards of personal development. Fellowship is the
Institute’s premier grade of membership and demonstrates
real professional status in the Industry. Fellowship
also confers full voting rights on the individual as
well as entitlement to stand for election to the Institute’s
Board of Directors.
Q: What’s
in it for my employer?
A: Employment of people holding the highest professional
designation from the IRM demonstrates that the organisation
is committed to maintaining competence levels. The
experience gained through undertaking the various activities
requires to achieve 200 points can also have a direct
value and relevance to the business.
Q: Can I qualify by writing a dissertation?
A: Completing a dissertation is a key route to
Fellowship and is particularly suited to members outside
of the U.K. Members who have the IRM Diploma may use the dissertation to
gain points towards the MSc in Risk Management at Glasgow
Caledonian University.
For guidelines on completing the dissertation, please
see Dissertation Guidelines
Q: How do I become a Fellow?
A: Please note you must be a Member
(MIRM) of the IRM to apply for Fellowship. To apply, complete the application form and forward it, together
with evidence of activities undertaken and the election
fee of £70. Your application will be reviewed by the Institute’s Fellowship Assessment Board. This comprises three qualified Fellows. Their job is to fairly asses each application and notify the applicant of the result of their application. Sucessful applicants must also pay the difference between Member and Fellow subscription rates.
There are two routes to Fellowship:
Option 1
Download the application
form (pdf - 117kb).
Then assemble evidence of your completion of each item
you are claiming for, for instance:
- Copies of articles published or papers presented
- Confirmation of attendance at a conference
- Authenticated statement of work experience from your
employer.
Option 2
Submit a dissertation, according to the dissertation guidelines.
Q: Can I claim for writing more than one article?
A: If you are claiming points for articles under the 'Routes to Fellowship Scheme', more than one article can be submitted with the condition that any one article can
only be claimed once, irrespective of whether it was
published with variations in more than one publication.
Q: What about other qualifications?
A: You can claim for additional relevant qualifications
taken since you were awarded MIRM. The Fellowship Assessment Board
will assess relevance and notify you accordingly.
Q: Is the election application fee refundable?
A: If following review by the Institute’s Assessment
Board, your application is not passed for election
to Fellowship, you have a further year to gain the
necessary points needed to achieve Fellowship without
payment of any further fee. Thereafter a surcharge
is payable to cover costs.
Fellowship election fees are not refundable if you
decide not to proceed to election after submission
of your details.
Q: What does the Fellowship Assessment Board actually
do with my application?
A: The Board
will review your application to ensure a balance between
the activities you have undertaken. Remember that Fellowship
reflects practical experience acquired and support given
to your Institute after election as a Member. The points
table provides a guide to qualification, but if
you have undertaken other activities you consider relevant,
do list details of these as well in your application.
