Calculating Contingencies at Project Level by George Houghton
George will cover:
- prerequisites for calculating contingencies
- risk allocation
- modelling techniques available
- using risk outputs to change the project approach.
George Houghton started as an engineer in the nuclear industry in the mid 1980s and has since gained a wide range of experience on major projects across a variety of different industries. He has worked in the field of risk management for the last 16 years and is now Senior Risk Manager at Magnox North, the company decommissioning and operating the northern group of nuclear reactors on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. |

Managing Portfolios and Programmes by David Booth
David will explore the relationships between adjacent risk management disciplines in assessing the collective risk position in a multiple project business environment. He will examine individual project and portfolio analysis and review techniques from the standpoint of realising optimum outturn performance for the portfolio as a whole. The balance between risk appetite in competitive bidding and assurance in timely delivery is considered in the context of shareholder expectation and a rigorous governance environment. The significance of clarity of information in all dimensions is emphasised - for project stakeholders, customers, functions and business leaders - with the associated demands this places on culture, awareness, training, behaviours, process and tools.
David Booth has been with BAE Systems Integrated Systems Technologies (Insyte) and its predecessors since 1980. Initially as an early-lifecycle engineering specialist in research and concept development, his work included capturing solution risk through integrating technical, acquisition, integration and delivery risk. In his current role he owns the design and implementation of the project risk process for the business unit as Head of Risk and Opportunity Management Consultancy. For 10 years, David has had a BAE Systems Corporate role in process governance and guidance, including ownership of the Lifecycle Guidance documentation used throughout the international BAE Systems project community. |

Valuing Enterprise Risks by Paul Curtis
Paul will outline how:
- the financial impacts of the risks that arose when forming the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) were identified, even when the outcomes at risk did not have a direct financial impact ;
- the changing impact of those risks inherited from the Dept of Constitutional Affairs (DCA) was measured;
- the potential downstream costs arising from, and the upstream costs to, other government departments; and
- the operational and strategic monitoring of these financial impacts.
Paul Curtis is with the Risk and Assurance Team at the Ministry of Justice.

Comprehensive Financial Risk Modelling by Fergus Mackie
All companies have potential liabilities which could affect their ability to stay in business. This includes the insurance industry and, following the failure of Equitable and others, the FSA came under Government pressure resulting in the ICAS (insurance capital assessment) regime. The intention is to ensure that insurance companies have sufficent capital to enable them to meet all policy holder claims in full. Fergus Mackie will explain how Axa Insurance implemented its capital optimisation approach drawing on various risk risk factors including: operational risk, reserving risk, underwriting risk, and market and credit risk. As such the talk will demonstrate how one company brought all its sources of risk together in a coherent and integrated way.
Fergus Mackie is Head of Financial Risk Management for AXA Insurance. He joined AXA in 2006 having been a partner in Strategy Consultants Oliver Wyman. Prior to this he was a partner at accountants KPMG. A qualified actuary, he has spent 17 years in General Insurance and has a particular interest in value based management and management information. |
| |
Basel II Overview, by Tim Brooke.
The talk will ask what was Basel I and why Basel I. Tim will then tell us what Basel II is, how it has changed the landscape for financial servies, and why it is relevant for the world outside financial services. He will conclude with some discussion of the implementation challenges.
Tim leads PWC’s Risk Assurance Services practice for the North of England. He joined PwC in 2006 following a financial services career with senior roles in organisations such as JPMorgan, Chase Manhattan Bank, Reuters and Lloyds Merchant Bank both in the UK and Europe. He led internal audit and risk functions in diverse locations, some of which had experienced significant structural change either through merger or deployment of new methodologies. Tim has a detailed and highly practical knowledge of operational, credit and market risks, particularly in the context of Basel II, the Combined Code and prudential guidance. His particular expertise is risk management, assurance and the governance challenges facing financial ! services firms

6 March 2007 -AIRMIC Risk Management Information Systems Roadshow
There are a large number of Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) available and it is difficult and time consuming to keep up to date with the recent developments in risk management software tools. To enable you to easily review the main RMIS currently available, a series of demonstrations has been organised by AIRMIC in the form of a roadshow.
A total of seven RMIS will be demonstrated at each location and you will be able to view up to five systems during the day. This is a great opportunity for you to view the leading RMIS – and there is no charge for attending the event.

Graham Rhodes of Bolton MBC and Geoff Bryant of Strategic Planning Associates explained how the Business Continuity Plan for Bolton MBC was developed. Bryan Richardson of Currie and Brown rounded off the meeting by presenting a methodology to deal with emerging risks, focusing on risk handling in the NHS using the NHS Design and Risk Toolkit (DART).
