Agenda

Introduction by Regional Group Chairman, Rahat Latif

Presentation by Terry Douglas, Director of Training, CCL: Financial Services Risk Management in the UAE: Could it Happen to Us?

Very much as a result of past problems, governments and regulators around the world place ever more pressure on financial services firms to effectively manage their risks. Senior management should by now be under no illusions as to where the buck stops if something goes wrong, but still it happens. Following cases such as WorldCom, Enron, Barings and BCCI the thinking was that the industry would have learnt very salutary lessons and 'it will never happen again' was repeated by politicians and regulators alike.

But recent cases such as Northern Rock and Societe Generale once again bring risk management into stark reality. Can we really say that we have learnt the lessons from the past and that it will not happen again.

The presentation will

  • Explore the regulator's approach to risk management in the UAE and globally
  • Focus on the requirements placed upon Senior Management
  • Explain best practice: risk mapping to achieve compliance...and success!
  • Explore the risks - from Nick Leeson to Jerome Kervial, and
  • Ask......are we managing the risks?

IRM is grateful to CCL for hosting and presenting at this event.
