| Topic |
The presentation at this meeting will be on the topic of alcohol, drugs and employment problems in the financial services sector. These problems are a matter of major social concern but their impact in the financial sector has been little studied or discussed, despite significant evidence of the risks that they contribute to. The presentation will introduce participants to the following aspects of the topic:
- Alcohol and drug abuse and dependency issues in organisations
- Corporate culture of abuse – the influence of the organisation on alcohol abuse
- Organisational risk assessment approach
- Objective ways of identifying trends of substance abuse
- Risks and evidence of problems arising from substance misuse in the financial sector
- Attitudes towards the problem within the sector
- Regulatory aspects of the problem including the Bank of England’s initiative in the 1990s and its subsequent abandonment
- How the financial sector and its regulator can help in the study and reduction of alcohol and drug problems.
The presentation will be delivered by Dr Michael McCann and Jonathan Goodliffe.
Dr McCann is an occupational physician with a record of work and publications in the alcohol and drugs field, including the risk assessment perspective of that subject. His professional experience covers the police, the drugs industry, banks, communications, civil service, media and retail. His latest book on “Alcohol, drugs and employment” was published in 2011.
Jonathan Goodliffe is a solicitor specialising in insurance and financial services regulation. He has carried out pro bono work in the alcohol field for over 25 years. His work has included research for the Law Society, published in a peer reviewed journal, on alcohol problems in the legal profession, and contributing to the foundation of a charity aimed at helping addicted lawyers. He has also carried out research and written articles in medical and insurance publications on alcohol and drug problems in the financial sector. He has a postgraduate certificate from Kings College London, in the identification of alcohol and drug use in the workplace.

- engage proactively with other groups
- provide input back into the IRM (post papers on website, contribute a blog, etc)
